Skincare Rule #2

SKINCARE RULES This series focuses on concepts I’ve learned after 25 years of running a professional skincare practice that apply to everyone. In SKINCARE RULE 1 we talked about the importance of keeping your skin as hydrated as possible. See all our Skincare Rules on Instagram

#2 HEALTHY SKIN REQUIRES A BALANCE OF OIL AND WATER

  1. For skin to look healthy, it has to be healthy
  2. Healthy skin has a radiant glow because of something called an Acid Mantle
  3. Your Acid Mantle is your skin’s natural lipid barrier, acidic in pH, which holds water in (prevents evaporation) and keeps infection out (like the acne bacteria)
  4. Skin Type is determined either by the presence of oil or lack of it
  5. If 2/3 or more of the face is actively producing oil, then you are an Oily Skin Type
  6. If only 1/3 of the face is actively producing oil, then you are a Combination Skin Type
  7. If 0/3 of the face are not producing oil, then you are a Dry Skin Type
  8. Can Oily Skin Types be dehydrated of water? YES!
  9. Can Dry Skin Types be dehydrated of water? YES!

Don’t be confused by the difference between oil and water. Skin Type is largely genetic and the amount of Sebum (Oil) your Sebaceous Glands secrete is governed by your Endocrine system (Hormones). In general, your Skin Type does not change from day to day, until there is a drop off in oil production which begins around the mid 40’s for most women and men.

However, the amount of water in your skin can fluctuate a lot, even throughout the day. Water hydration in skin is influenced by many factors which include but are not limited to:

  1. How much water you drink
  2. How many diuretics you consume – think caffeine, alcohol, some medications
  3. How much humidity is in the air.

The goal of Professional Skincare is to balance the oil and water; not too much or too little of one or the other. This cannot be achieved on your own at home. It requires Professional Skin Analysis, Exfoliation, Extraction, and deep hydrating methods to determine the correct course of treatment.

I love this photo because it really shows well what a healthy acid mantle looks like; radiant and glowing, not oily or dehydrated. The series of photos shows the progression of Grade 3-4 acne over the course of several visit. These photos show that healthy, radiant, glowing skin is possible no matter what Skin Type you’ve been gifted.
